20 Writing Mistakes Even Native Speakers Make
Writing is not a very easy task and requires immense learning and practice. If you are a writer by profession and make mistakes quite often, do not worry because there are certain grammatical mistakes that even native speakers make. Following are 20 most common mistakes that almost everyone make: Me and I The use of ââ¬Ëmeââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ in any sentence could be mistaken quite often. Both of these words are correct to use but you have to recognize which one fits well in the sentence. ââ¬ËAlex and me are going out for dinnerââ¬â¢ is incorrect but ââ¬ËAlex and I are going out for dinnerââ¬â¢ fits well so you can recognize this by reading it. Lose and loose The difference between both is that lose is a verb which expresses the loss of something while loose is an adjective which means released from attachment or not bounded together. While a few writers mistakenly add an extra ââ¬Ëoââ¬â¢, majority confuse both the words and so here is the difference between both. Its and itââ¬â¢s Both are correct in their own context but writing experts suggests people to avoid the latter because of being categorized as a slang word. ââ¬ËItââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ is a short form of it is which is to be used in a different manner from its. In simpler words, ââ¬Ëitsââ¬â¢ is a possessive pronoun! There, their and theyââ¬â¢re Many writers unintentionally confuse these three words for each other which is not a flaw within you. There is an adverb, there is a possessive pronoun and theyââ¬â¢re is simply a short form of they are. Whose and whoââ¬â¢s The former is a possessive form of who while the latter is a short form of who is so you must keep this in mind. Students are often aware of this difference but still forget when it is time to apply. Your vs. Youââ¬â¢re Your is a possessive pronoun and is used formally in almost every formal situation while youââ¬â¢re is a slang of you are. While in a hurry, people might interchange these terms with one another. Write and right As a college student, you must be aware of the differences between the two terms but confusing these words is common when in hurry. Write is a verb and right is an adjective so make sure you use them wisely in your writing. Effect and affect Former is a noun which means a result while latter is a verb which means to act on. Accept and except Accept is a verb which means to take or receive while except is a preposition which means excluding. Gone and went Gone is the past participle while went is the past tense of ââ¬Ëto goââ¬â¢. Comma splice You must have made a mistake when two independent clauses are linked with only a comma in between which violates the rules of English. Hear and Here Here is an adverb while hear is verb so use both of these similar words carefully when writing. Irregardless and regardless A common mistake that some native speakers even made was the use of irregardless instead of regardless. Irregardless is not any word in the dictionary! Plural form and apostrophe Students often use the apostrophe in an incorrect manner due to which a word does not changes into plural. For example, a lot of cats instead of ââ¬Ëa lot of catââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ can define this point. Use of prepositions inappropriately Another mistake that even native speakers make is the use of prepositions incorrectly, Dangling participle A mistake that can completely change the meaning and flow of your writing is dangling participle. Two, too and to With to as a preposition, too as an adverb and two as Noun, students often mistake one of these words with the people. Then and than Then is an adverb which means immediately or soon afterwards while than is used after comparative adjectives. Were, where and weââ¬â¢re Were is a past tense of ââ¬Ëto beââ¬â¢, where is an adverb while weââ¬â¢re is a short form of we are. Could have and could of A common argument that remains between native speakers and foreigners is that could of is very close to could have so they confuse both.

Medical Insurance Essays - Types Of Insurance, Free Essays
Medical Insurance Essays - Types Of Insurance, Free Essays Medical Insurance MEDICAL INSURANCE IS NON-BENIFICIAL The initial idea of medical insurance should have been a good idea as a way of helping Americans afford medical bills in a case of emergency or just routine physicals and check-ups. A lot of lower class Americans could not afford the treatment and would therefore go without medical attention in both of these cases. In cases of emergency, they would usually be put in to collection because they could not pay the bills after the treatment. The government decided to set a plan to have humans insured, just like automobiles, to supposedly make medical treatment available to all people - high, middle, or low class. This should have been a good idea...however, I believe that it has only made things less affordable. By making this plan for insurance on human health, the insurance agencies are making trillions upon trillions of dollars on people who would usually skip going to the doctor for a common cold. Initially, the insurance policies were made to help in emergency situations for people who had a broken a leg, or had to have major surgery and could not afford the price of high-technology treatment. The insurance would have made the customer pay about fifty dollars a month out of theyre hard-earned money whether they were going to use it or not, for medical treatment. Still, the insurance did not cover all of the expenses even though the customer is shelling out thousands of dollars, sometimes for nothing. It is just another way for a large insurance business to make people believe that they need to insure their own health, like they were a possession or an item. Now people are paying for insurance that they seldom use, but feel better because the business has made them believe that they cannot and will not live without medical insurance. Another bad result of medical insurance is that it has turned the entire field of medicine in to a financial playground of human life. Doctors are supposed to treat all patients equally, as opposed to treating only those with insurance first, no matter what the circumstance. People who cannot afford health insurance or are not offered the option by their jobs are usually facing the problems of the prices that are now raised as a result of the entire insurance idea. Not only is health insurance making the doctors care less about their patients, it is also raising the prices higher on already outrageous medical bills. In conclusion, I believe that the medical insurance idea is argumentive, because there are a lot of repercussions that people may or may not have thought about. The insurance companies are benifiting immensely, but are we? The prices of medical treatments are rising, the doctors attention to actual patients as opposed to who has insurance is diminishing, and less people are benefiting from health insurance. I do not think that medical insurance should have been proposed in the first place. I do admit that it should have been a benifit to Americans, but I have yet to see everyone benifit as innitialy planned.

Management Control Systems Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Management Control Systems - Term Paper Example According to Bedford (2006), different MCS components represent a package if they function jointly with the purpose of attaining organisational outcomes. Following this line of discussion, it is further stated that if the links between the control system components (for instance, financial plan and organisationââ¬â¢s traditions) are not sufficient, then the system may not execute its planned functions. That is, the MCS may be unsuccessful to control behaviour in the anticipated manner (Macintosh & Quattrone, 2010, p. 41). Management control systems (MCS) facilitate businesses to raise the possibility that workers take decisions and actions that are in the businesses' best interest. There are a number of management control components or systems, for instance, accounting controls or non-accounting controls such as conduct and clan controls. Management control components or systems do not function independently, but might connect and influence one another. This notion of MCS function ing as a package has been there for decades pursued by calls to evaluate this feature. The complexity in evaluating particular constituents of MCS individually from other organisational controls is the chance for severe under-specification. Hence, it is essential to know the way arrangements of controls can be united to go well with the specific situation of the organisation. The term package indicates to several MCS being used within businesses that can either be purposely planned or synchronized or not. In the first instance, the complete system could be known as a MCS. The second case portrays a condition within which the various operational MCS are not synchronized deliberately such as due to the design and execution by diverse organisational divisions, and should not be considered as single system but instead as a package of systems. ââ¬Å"Thus, the term ââ¬ËMCS packageââ¬â¢ leaves open the questions whether and how its management control elements or MCS are coordinatedà ¢â¬ (Macintosh & Quattrone, 2010, p. 63). Regardless of its justifiable position within management control study, contingency theoretic approach has developed on organisational eventuality presumption. Organisational issues have described management accounting as well as control systems existence and aim, but the results have stayed somewhat disjointed. This is perhaps because earlier contingent issues - that is, the management control systems further than what is studied - have an effect on the central MCS more than isolated organisational traits and factors. Thus, package approach to MCS has chance to create a contingency presumption of management accounting. As a general notion, a management control systems (MCS) package is a group or set of controls as well as control systems. The individual control systems may be extra conventional accounting controls, for instance, finances and financial measures, or organisational controls, for instance, organisation structure and governan ce systems, together with more socially based controls like principles and traditions. The structure of Malmi and Brown (2008) contain five separate control components: planning, cybernetic, reward and compensation, administrative and cultural controls. Planning controls have two special control systems that are ââ¬Ëlong range planningââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëaction planningââ¬â¢. Long range planning usually has a further strategic concentration while action planning has a tactical concentration. The component of planning control has a number of special roles. They create the objectives that facilitate in directing effort as well as activities within an organisation. They as well facilitate correspondence by supporting objectives

Discussion 1 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 2
Discussion 1 - Essay Example It would also involve gathering of insects, eggs or even hunting birds and animals (Andersen & Taylor, 2011). These activities require women to have sophisticated knowledge on trapping skills, fishing and even root and tuber searching. Tools such as digging sticks, bows, knives and fishing nets are used in the activities mentioned above. Women are also involved in cultivation of crops such as tubers, roots and even grains in gardens using ordinary hand tools such as hoes. The status of women has been impacted negatively because they are not empowered. In the societies above, women are required to stay close to their homes to take care of the children. They are required to bear children and work hard to provide for them. Therefore, they stay around homesteads and dig in the gardens around them. In this context, the women are home makers and cannot explore distant areas like their male counterparts. This situation has made women be left out in contributing to economic development within the foraging and horticultural based societies. This has resulted to women spending much of their time in gathering, hunting and taking care of the family. The situation above is being experienced in developing countries such as those within Asia. In such societies, women would even bear many children so that food procurement becomes easy because such a step would increase the labor force. On the other hand, their American counterparts contribute to economic development of their nation. In fact, most of them spend most of their time working and would even earn more than their husbands. Here, women have fewer children that they can easily manage, and this allows them to focus on their careers. To the American women, food is not a problem, and they do not spend much time in accessing it. In such societies, processed food is used, and it requires them to buy it, and present it for consumption. This brings out the difference between

Reflections on the Black Race Essay Example for Free
Reflections on the Black Race Essay That the issue of Obamaââ¬â¢s racial background is much talked about in terms of his fitness for the US presidency only proves this: that we Americans have a long way to go in our pursuit of adherence to the ideals of our declaration of independence. After all the document held the fundamental equality of people, and everymanââ¬â¢s inalienable rights, to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The declaration did not favor any race in the universality of its coverage. So how come some people have raised the specter of doom for America once the black mestizo Obama wins the US presidency? How come a Democrat lawyer is doggedly pursuing, ostensibly as a matter of principleââ¬âthat Barack Obma is not a ââ¬Å"natural born Americanâ⬠and is therefore unqualified to run for the presidency of the United States. The Democrat lawyer claimed his motivation was his loyalty to the US constitution. (Refer to the You Tube citation in the reference below for this item). But Surname 2 one can sense a certain ferocity in his campaign that didnââ¬â¢t seem to jibe with his claimed adherence. The dramatic performance of this Democrat lawyer complete with reciting his monologue with the Philadelphia edifice in his background is obviously a public relations stunt of a deeply rooted racist. This theatrics however considerably lost its mantle after a considered US statesman and former Secretary of Stateââ¬âthe full-blooded Republican Mr. Powellââ¬â endorsed Mr. Obama, making sure he stood for principle in supporting Mr. Obama. Mr. Powell was also bothered by the way his own Republican camp was hitting the dirt in their campaign of hatred against the black American Democratic candidate. (Refer again to the You Tube citation in the reference. ) Mr. Powell finally called for ââ¬Å"a generational changeâ⬠, and coming as it did from a senior Republican ââ¬â for a long time, an unprecedented bipartisanship Mr Powell raised a very important gesture of statesmanship and concern for American welfare. (You Tube). . In his book Dreams from my Father, Obama in the first 20 pages described a life that started as a young mind, clueless on the lifetime struggle that was to be on his shoulders as a black mestizo. He described Kansas, as the dab-smack, landlocked center of the country, a place where decency and endurance and the pioneer spirit were joined at the hip with conformity and suspicion and the potential for unblinking cruelty. (p. 13). Take note of his analogy of the metaphorical duality of his environment when he described Kansas as a place of decency, endurance, and (pioneering) spirit on the upper side, joined in the hip with such negative traits as conformity, suspicion, and the potential for Surname 3 unblinking crueltyâ⬠¦ This fairly balanced assessment of his origins recognized the fundamental decency of the American people , but also noted the attitudinal duality to racial origins in his country of birth. In this book Obama explored the pervasive racial issues that he encountered in life, from childhood, to college, and by now he must have realizedââ¬âto the present, when as the Democrat candidates, he stood on the threshold of American presidency. Despite this stature, he was still grappling with the race issue. As a young man, Obama was unmindful of the thought ââ¬Å"(that )my father looked nothing like the people around me ââ¬â that he was black as pitch, my mother white as milk. â⬠(p. 16) It was an infinitely harder life for the common blacks. In Obamaââ¬â¢s case he only started to become aware of the weight of his racial identity as he grew up. Obama as a black did not come from the underprivileged, but from a relatively middle class environment. Compared to what Obama went through, Brent Staples now tells us that ordinary blacks suffered even harsher environments. Consoling blacks, he reminded them of the historical movement toward their freedom. They came from a country that barely a few decades ago was absolutely racist, a virtual apartheid which situation started to collapse only after World War II. Staples said that only after the collapse did blacks start to move out of their sequestered world and into colleges, jobs, and walks of life that had been closed to them until then. Surname 4 Still, black Americans who came from successful, suburban and upwardly mobile families were regularly dismissed as white or inauthentic . In other words, Brent Staples also blamed blacks for wanting to further marginalize themselves and to inflict on themselves a marginalized status. ââ¬Å"The authentic black experience, it was said at the time, was limited to the hard-core, impoverished upbringing that black people often chose to brag about, even when they had actually grown up with private prep schools in the lap of luxury,â⬠was Brentââ¬â¢s assessment of the black mentality of the 60s. In other words, even Obama was unacceptable to these blacks because he was not authentically ââ¬Å"blackâ⬠in the poverty side of the issue. But another Republican Alan Keyes dished out another execrable crap when he opposed Mr. Obama in the Illinois Senate race back in 2004 saying Mr. Obama was not black because ââ¬Å"he was not descended from slaves. â⬠Clearly both black and whites think of blacks as having to be miserable in order to qualify for this racial group. The self-image of this group seems to be one that perpetually deprecates itself as always coming from the bottom. Mr. Obama himself, a would-be president of the United States has experienced the existential problem of how it is to be black in the worldââ¬â¢s most prosperous country. In his book Obama disclosed how he coped with life as a black in a society dominated by whites. As Staples explains it: ââ¬Å"He stumbled onto the mysteries of race in his own good time and pursued them in his own way. His quest took him to an impoverished community on the South Surname 5 Side of Chicago, where he worked as an organizer in an infamous public housing project before discovering his vocation as a politician. â⬠And Staples sees hope that this division would soon be resolved with a greater understanding of the multiplicity of experiences among marginalized peoples in any society. Said he: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ The hue and cry over Barack Obamaââ¬â¢s identity stems from a failure by black traditionalists to recognize multiracial versions of themselves. Soon enough, perhaps by yearââ¬â¢s end, however, the Obama story, which seems so exotic to so many people now, will have found its place among all the other stories of the sprawling black diaspora. â⬠Surname 6 Works Cited Obama, Barack. Slavery in the United States Essay example -- Slavery Essays
Slavery in the United States In the history of the United States nothing has brought more shame to the face of America than the cold, premeditated method of keeping black people in captivity. People from England who migrated to America used many different methods to enslave black people and passed them down through the children. These methods were quite effective, so effective that these ââ¬Å"slavesâ⬠were kept in captivity for over two hundred years in this country. It was the rain of terror that kept black people in fear of their lives for so long. The invention of the gun back in the fifth-teenth century was the main reason that these people were able to go to another continent and enslave so many people. These people from Africa were mistreated very badly right from the start both mentally and physically. They were packed very tightly on ships for months at a time chained to each other with no place to go to the bathroom, little water to drink, and hardly anything to eat. As the population constantly increased in the colonies during the 1600ââ¬â¢s, so did the demand for slavery especially in the southern colonies where the big plantations were. These plantations were very lucrative since the owners had free manual labor and they could keep all the profit from the crops for themselves. They also had to justify what they were doing to themselves so what they did was tell themselves that these slaves were barbaric and not smart enough to be civilized. These slave owners also owned huge houses in the middle of their plantations and thought of themselves as noblemen. In acuality, it was the slaves who were living nobly while the Europeans were living barbaricly. The Europeans who owned slaves also thought that the sl... ...un power is what created slavery. Keeping the fear in the eyes of the slaves is what kept them working under such poor conditions everyday, while their friends and family could be sold away at any time or place. Learning English and being able to read and write is what educated these men and women. Once they were educated enough, they could secretly plan escape routes to the north and finally get some sympathy for their people which would eventually lead to the Civil War. This war was about right and wrong. There is a moral way to make money and then there is an immoral way to make a living. Slavery is the number one event in our countryââ¬â¢s history that has disgraced and put shame to our culture. Even though not everyone owned slaves, one bad apple spoils the bunch. Hopefully people will learn from history, and immoral actions or events like slavery will not take place again.

Animalsââ¬â¢ Roles in The Wars Essay
Written by Timothy Findley in 1977, The Wars is a novel that explores the theme of young human life under the pressing concerns during the war, specifically the First World War, seeing the world of soldiers turn into a world of violence, and how these soldiers have turned into brutes themselves. The character of Robert Ross, a nineteen year-old Canadian officer and whose life is narrated mostly from the third-person point of view, is revealed as a character that has a concern for animalsââ¬âthus prompting Ross to save the horses which cost him his life in the endââ¬âamidst the brutal turn of events where death was almost certain in the killing fields. The birds, coyote and rabbits also symbolize certain events in the story. à à à à à à à à à à à Soldiers are typically known to be highly sensitive of their surroundings when in the fields for they cannot exactly pinpoint where and when combat might ensue or from what direction the enemy might be coming from. This is perhaps one of the reasons why Ross was able to notice the chirping of the birds while he and the rest of the soldiers were out in the war. Ross was able to take notice of the fact that each time the birds stopped singing, an attack from the enemy soon takes place. Perhaps it was mere coincidence, although one can strongly tie that event with the attacks that followed thereafter as birds are familiar with their environment more than the soldiers; slight changes in their environment, especially changes which have a lot to do with probable dangers; cause the birds to fly away. Taken with the context of the encounters of Ross with the birds, it can be said that those birds served as warning signs for the young soldier. Whenever the birds stopped singing, it is almost certain that Ross is about to encounter danger along the way. ââ¬Å"The birds, being gone, had taken some mysterious presence with them (p. 81),â⬠showing how the sudden absence of these birds felt rather unusual, as if to signal something bad is about to happen. à à à à à à à à à à à It is unusual as well for man and beast to have a close relationship, especially when the animal is known to be a hunter and can be a threat to the security of man. But more than that, any relationship between man and beast can mean simple companionship to a deep friendship. As far as Ross and the coyote are concerned, it can be said that the animal accompanied the young soldier to a certain extent in the story. ââ¬Å"One night, Robert ran with a coyote (p. 25)â⬠and when the men were out for a drink the coyote also ââ¬Å"drunk at the brink (p. 27)â⬠of the water ââ¬Å"and suddenly sat (p. 28).â⬠An observation of these rather unusual events would tell us that the coyote acted as if it was a member of the soldiers. This is interesting as it presents a revealing irony one can not easily notice; soldiers in the war, as Ross himself has observed, are violent men who are more like beasts who wielded weapons to kill. With the presence of the coyote among the group, it can be said that they, too, were much like the coyote. The soldiers, in fact, ââ¬Å"gathered like whispering conspirators around the edges of a bright sheet of water (p. 27),â⬠a sly trait typical to that of coyotes. à à à à à à à à à à à While coyotes symbolize how men in the war have turned into beasts, rabbits on the other hand serve as reminders for Ross to treat animals in general with respect as if they were human beings. On one occasion, Ross was hesitant to kill the rabbits as ordered by his estranged mother, Mrs. Ross, shortly after the death of Rowena, Robertââ¬â¢s older sister, since they gave him memories about his older sister and since Rowena owned those rabbits. ââ¬Å"Rabbits had to die, and Robert had to do it (p. 18),â⬠which presents one conflict in the novelââ¬âthe conflict between the command to destroy the animals which pin back memories and the apparent weakness of the main protagonist to kill even animals. It can be said that if Ross decides to kill the rabbits, it was like as if he has killed the memories of Rowena. If he decides not to kill them, it proves that he is unable to even wield a weapon against these small animals, which is of course not a good sign for someone who would enlist in the army during the war. It also shows how Ross was more human than anybody else in the story, especially his estranged mother and the rest of the soldiers in his group. His inclination to preserve whatever memory remains from the departed tells us that Ross is not keen to destroy, or that he is not a natural ââ¬Å"destroyerâ⬠of animal life which, ironically, cost him his life as he tried to save some of the Army horses after killing two of his fellow soldiers. à à à à à à à à à à à The point where Ross tries to save the Army horses was also the time when he finally turned to madness and prompted him to kill the lives of his fellowmen. Apparently, it is a contrast which tells us that insanity can push a person to kill other people yet care for beasts. That is because Ross himself has finally become a beast near the end of the story and, thus, he is now more than inclined to save his own kind rather than protect and preserve the life of other men. He is no longer the same man at the start of the story who was afraid to kill. This transformation can be attributed to the onslaught of the war, which seemed to have absorbed Robert right into it. As he was now unable to rise above the madness of the war, Robert Ross eventually turned quite like the rest of the army, willing to kill and die just so to save other lives although this time he saved the lives of horses. à à à à à à à à à à à The animals in the story offer an interesting insight into some important events in the novel, especially in terms of how the life of the protagonist, Robert Ross, always hanged in the balance of making crucial decisions. In general, the story is able to reveal how the lives of soldiers always deal with certain conflicts individually and together as a group. Findleyââ¬â¢s novel is also able to show how young minds of young individuals tend to fold under pressing moments in their lives. Reference Findley, T. (1996). The Wars. Penguin: Canada.
